Frequently Asked Questions
What is a CBCT scanner?
A CBCT, or Cone Beam CT, gives us a full three-dimensional view of the teeth, jaw, airway, and bone structure, something a traditional 2D X-ray simply cannot do. Seeing all of that in three dimensions means more precise diagnosis, better treatment planning, and ultimately better results.
Is CBCT safe? What about radiation?
We researched this carefully before selecting the machine. The iCAT Cone Beam CT is one of the lowest-radiation options available, and the settings we use for a full scan are roughly equivalent to about one day of natural background radiation, similar to a single panoramic radiograph. We would not bring in a technology we were not completely confident in on safety.
Why does 3D imaging matter for my child's treatment?
With this level of detail we can identify the exact amount of expansion needed, evaluate airway concerns with precision, and build more accurate plans. Whether we are planning early intervention for a child or working up a complex case, we have a complete three-dimensional picture to work from.
Is this available at both offices?
Yes. We have had this technology at our Providence location for some time, and it is now at our Wakefield office as well, so South County families have access to the same advanced diagnostic imaging.
