Looking for a palate expander in Wakefield or South County? A palate expander gently widens the upper jaw, and it does far more than make room for crowded teeth. Because the roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nose, widening the palate can open the nasal airway and make breathing easier. At Anchor Orthodontics on Salt Pond Road, expanders are central to how we approach early treatment for South County families.

It is skeletal, not just dental

In children, the two bones of the upper palate have not fused yet, so steady, gentle pressure opens them apart and the body fills in new bone over about six months. That is real skeletal change, a permanently wider jaw, not just tipped teeth. Getting the foundation right early can create space for adult teeth, reduce the need for future extractions, and improve breathing. You cannot build a straight, stable smile on a foundation that is too narrow. Learn more on our main palate expanders page, and how expanders often fit into early intervention.

Comfortable, and honest with kids

We use custom 3D-printed expanders made from a precise digital model of your child's mouth. Placing one does not hurt. We tell every kid the same two things first: nothing we are about to do is going to hurt, and it is going to feel strange to swallow for a few days. Most kids grumble for two or three days and feel completely normal within a week. Expansion is easiest around age seven and gets harder as the bones knit together by twelve or thirteen.

Adults can benefit too. Dr. Courtney Lavigne has additional training in adult expansion using MSE or MARPE to widen the palate without the jaw surgery this once required. We only recommend expansion when 3D records show it genuinely helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a palate expander actually do?

An expander gradually widens the upper jaw while its growth plate is still adaptable. That creates room for crowded teeth, corrects crossbites, and opens space for the tongue and nasal airway.

Do expanders hurt?

Ours are custom 3D printed from a digital scan, so they fit precisely and insertion is comfortable. Kids typically feel pressure for the first few days of activation, not pain, and most adjust to eating and speaking within a week.

Can adults get palate expanders in Wakefield?

Yes. We offer MSE/MARPE expansion for many adults who need to widen the palate without surgery. It is not right for every adult, so it starts with an evaluation and 3D imaging at our Salt Pond Road office.

Is the Wakefield office convenient for South County expander visits?

Yes. We are at 24 Salt Pond Road, Suite A3, near Route 1 and Route 108, with ample parking. Kids' exams to evaluate whether an expander is needed are free.
