Retainers

Book Now

Finishing braces or Invisalign is a milestone, not the finish line. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their old positions, especially in the first months after appliances come off. Retainers hold the result you worked for. At Anchor Orthodontics, retainer care is part of every comprehensive plan at both our Providence and Wakefield offices.

Why retainers matter

Bone and gum fibers need time to stabilize around newly moved teeth. Without retention, even a beautifully finished case can relapse. That is true for kids, teens, and adults. We explain your retainer plan before treatment ends so there are no surprises on debond day.

Fixed vs. removable

Depending on your bite and habits, we may recommend a fixed (bonded) retainer behind the front teeth, a removable clear retainer, or a combination. Fixed retainers stay in place around the clock and are easy to forget about once you are used to them. Removable retainers are clear trays worn full-time at first, then typically nights only as we taper. We will tell you exactly how long full-time wear lasts for your case; it is not one-size-fits-all.

  • Wear schedule: full-time at first, then nights as directed
  • Replacement: retainers wear out or get lost; call us promptly for a replacement rather than going without
  • Hygiene: brush around fixed wires carefully; clean removable trays daily

Both offices, same standard of care

Retainer checks and replacements happen at either Providence (133 Pitman Street) or Wakefield (24 Salt Pond Road, Suite A3). If you finished adult treatment with us, keep us in the loop when a retainer cracks or stops fitting. Adults planning a new smile can start with an adult orthodontics consult; kids who need a first look can schedule a free exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to wear a retainer?

Most patients wear retainers full-time for a period after braces or aligners come off, then nights long-term. We give you a specific schedule for your case; teeth can shift at any age without retention.

What is the difference between fixed and removable retainers?

A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded behind the teeth and stays in place. A removable retainer is a clear tray you take out to eat and brush. Many patients use one or both, depending on their bite.

What if I lose or break my retainer?

Call us promptly so we can replace it before teeth start to shift. Do not wait weeks hoping it turns up. Both our Providence and Wakefield offices can help with replacements.

Do you see retainer patients at both offices?

Yes. Retainer checks and replacements are available at 133 Pitman Street in Providence and at 24 Salt Pond Road, Suite A3 in Wakefield.
